We've designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft
capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We're
looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we
push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal
Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing
to launch commercial service in 2025.
Overview
The Airworthiness Group Lead will be a key position supporting Type
Certification, Continued Operational Safety, and Type Design change
project administration within Joby. - The Airworthiness Group Lead
will report directly to the Integrated Aircraft Lead and will be
responsible for managing the Airworthiness Group. - This position
will own, support, and actively contribute to the administration of
airworthiness projects and will also be responsible for
establishing departmental processes, standards, and best practices.
This position requires a driven, meticulous, and professional
individual that is focused on accurate and expeditious execution of
projects. - Joby is looking for a hardworking, enthusiastic team
member capable of self-managing their own work, coordinating the
work of other airworthiness professionals, and who has the right
temperament for fostering a healthy and constructive relationship
with the regulatory community. - Joby needs this individual to both
understand the safety and compliance environment of certification
while at the same time be forward thinking in evolving the
certification process in a constructive manner considering modern
development approaches to aircraft and systems. -
Responsibilities
- Build and manage the Joby Airworthiness Group ("Office of
Airworthiness"), including recruiting initiatives, performance
management, and personnel development - -
- Organize and manage highly complex and challenging civil
certification projects with the FAA and international Civil
Aviation Authorities -
- Work across a broad portfolio of products including aircraft,
electric engines, propellers, complex systems, software, and
airborne electronic hardware -
- Continue to build mutual trust within Joby and with FAA
leadership and specialists, foster teamwork, develop efficient
business practices, and continue to mature Joby certification
competencies -
- Represent Joby in a professional manner and build corporate
relationships with regulatory authorities, working groups, and
industry committees -
- Develop and execute policy and airworthiness standards
development efforts with regulatory authorities and industry
consensus standards groups -
- Interface with Joby and regulatory authority personnel in the
areas of certification project execution, collaborative development
of certification basis, collaborative development of means of
compliance, responding to regulatory changes, and similar

- Manage certification data packages and their delivery to
regulatory authorities, including but not limited to applications,
certification plans and reports, test plans, Issue Papers, Master
Compliance Checklists, accomplishment summaries, manuals,
Instructions for Continued Airworthiness, and similar -
- Organize and maintain airworthiness and certification project
records, engineering files, type design data, and substantiating
data -
- Plan, monitor, and track certification project deliverables,
risks and issues, action items, and recurring coordination
activities, including project dashboards for strategic and tactical
design making -
- Outline and implement a development program for the
Airworthiness Group, including process and procedure development,
training, and work standardization -
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve company
airworthiness processes, tools, standards, best practices, and
associated training -
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve company designee
management processes and plans and record keeping -
- Provide airworthiness administration guidance and input to
engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams -
- Interpret requirements and advise company personnel in matters
related to airworthiness, certification, and policy interpretation

- Contribute to internal familiarization and training,
mentorship, and coaching on aspects of certification,
airworthiness, and associated processes and expectations, as
required -
- Work closely with all other departments to ensure corporate
needs relating to airworthiness will be met, including engineering,
flight test, manufacturing, quality, and operations - -
- Report on airworthiness risks and issues to project and
executive leadership -
- Manage coordination meetings and action items for airworthiness
efforts -
- Resolve problems early using timely and effective communication
methods - -
- Perform other duties as assigned or required -
Required
- Strong knowledge of 14 CFR Part 21 and Part 23 requirements,
guidance, policy, processes, and means and methods of compliance
-
- Strong knowledge of FAA Order 8110.4C -
- Direct experience working with FAA, EASA, or other Civil
Aviation Authorities -
- Basic knowledge of ARP 4754, ARP-4761, RTCA/DO-178, and
RTCA/DO-254 and the associated Advisory Circulars recognizing these
industry standards -
- Experience developing applicant positions on complex compliance
issues, including Issue Papers, Equivalent Level of Safety, Special
Conditions, and Exemptions -
- Able to think creatively towards meeting airworthiness
requirements and company objectives - -
- 10+ years of experience in the civil aviation industry

- 3+ years of experience managing technical professionals
-
- Effective at leading technical professionals, including
individual mentorship, task management, and skills and performance
development -
- Excellent problem solving, communication, coordination, and
technical writing skills--- -
- Excellent presentation skills, able to communicate effectively
with technical professionals, project managers, and executive
leadership -
- Strong organizational skills and highly detail-oriented -

- Strong time and project management abilities, able to
effectively work on multiple projects at once -
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related technical
discipline; Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems
Engineering preferred -
- Proficient in English -
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Docs -
- Able to relocate permanently to the Santa Cruz, CA area

- Able to travel more than 25% of the time -
Desired
- Previous experience as a Manager/Director of Airworthiness or
ODA Administrator for an aircraft OEM -
- Strong knowledge of Part 23 Amendment 64 intent and the
corollary role of industry consensus standards -
- Experience on multiple, whole-aircraft certification projects,
clean-sheet designs preferred -
- Strong knowledge of ASTM, RTCA, and SAE standards -
- Working knowledge of Changed Product Rule and associated
guidance -
- Strong knowledge of 14 CFR Parts 25, 27, 29, 33, 35, 36, 91,
and 135 regulations, policy, and guidance material -
- Expert level understanding of normal category aircraft and
their systems, airplanes and/or rotorcraft -
- Previous experience training technical and professional
personnel in aspects of civil certification - -
- 15+ years of experience in the civil aviation industry

- 10+ years of experience managing technical professionals

- Master's degree or higher -
- Experience using Dassault, Atlassian, and Polarian software
tools - -
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted
Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is
$156,000-$208,000/year. The compensation package will be determined
by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.Joby also offers a
