Merrill College at the University of California, Santa Cruz
(UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers to
teach sections of College 1, the first course of UCSC's Academic
Literacy Curriculum. College 1 is a required core course designed
to help students develop academic and civic proficiency in reading
and critical thinking. Students will develop understanding of
"academic ethos" and habits of mind and practice that are tied to a
sense of belonging and academic success. This course prepares
students for success in other UCSC courses. There is no placement
exam for College 1; enrollment in this course is not tracked by
proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking.
Instructors meet with a seminar of about thirty students two or
three times per week and present material from an established
syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in
small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative
evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and
carry out other typical instructional duties.
Merrill College is dedicated to studying the effects of change in
the world--social, political, economic, cultural--with a special
focus on questions of social justice at intersections between the
developed and developing worlds. The Merrill College core course
examines a range of non-fiction texts in light of these themes and
in the context of the expectations of the academic literacy
curriculum. Applicants should be able to draw on their knowledge in
one or several of the major disciplinary subject areas. Expertise
in fields of study in the humanities and social sciences
(including, but not limited to, sociology, anthropology, economics,
politics, and, history) is particularly relevant.
Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly
encouraged to apply:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree).
- Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from a
wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with current theory and research in critical and
- Familiarity with current theory and research in a field of
study relevant to the topical foci (see above) of Merrill
- A minimum of two years' experience teaching critical and
analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at a four-year college
