DESCRIPTION

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California,
Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar in Marine Protected Area
Analysis, under the joint direction of UCSC professors Pete Raimondi and Mark Carr, and Oregon State University professor Will White.

The successful applicant will be assigned the following responsibilities:

* Develop mathematical models and model data comparisons to predict and evaluate the response of fished populations to protection across the network of marine protected areas.

* Work with the PIs to design, plan, and execute analyses and communicate research findings to resource managers and other stakeholders.

* Prepare research reports and manuscripts for management agencies and peer reviewed journals, respectively.

* Present research at scientific conferences and public outreach events.

* Present results to staff at management agencies (CDFW) and boundary organizations (e.g., California Ocean Science Trust) to support formal evaluations of marine protected areas in CA.

* Assist in the training of graduate and undergraduate students in thesis or dissertation preparation, research methods, and computational/mathematical methods.

* Experience with age , stage , or size structured population models, or integral projection models;

* Experience with species distribution models;

* Experience using Git and/or GitHub or similar version control and file sharing software; and/or

* Peer reviewed publication record (commensurate with career stage) in the field of population modeling or marine conservation and fisheries.

The duties of the position will require the postdoctoral scholar to consistently demonstrate effective communication skills.

ACADEMIC TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

* Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in ecology, fisheries biology, applied mathematics, or a combination of these areas, or a closely related field.

* Demonstrated experience n quantitative ecology, particularly population dynamics and modeling.

* Experience with either R or Matlab.

POSITION AVAILABLE
January 1, 2021. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
