Description

The Division of Social Sciences [https://socialsciences.ucsc.edu/] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Global and Community Health scholar with expertise in the social justice questions raised by societal and environmental influences on health. The position is open to any field in the Social Sciences at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level.

The selected candidate will be invited to join one of the following departments: Anthropology, Community Studies, Economics, Education, Environmental Studies, Latin American & Latino Studies, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, and also contribute to new program development and teaching in Global Community Health (GCH).

The selected candidate will be an outstanding researcher on global and community health with a focus on social justice issues such as socio-economic inequalities, structural violence, war, disability, trauma, and migration. Applicants might also have expertise in global health security, health rights, law and governance, development, disease surveillance, the politics of health policy reform, biometrics, mental health, or health activism. Strong candidates will possess collaborative and organizational skills based on experiences working with diverse communities through collaborative partnerships (e.g., with non-profits, NGOs, foundations, community-based organizations, schools and/or local governments). We are especially interested in a scholar who takes a broad historical and geographical approach to specific, grounded health problems; who works to understand seemingly “local” issues within global economic, environmental and political processes. Our interests align with the emerging framework of “critical global health” that calls for research attentive to power dynamics and inequality, and in which scholars are accountable to the communities they study.

Applicants should have expertise in global health research, demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring GCH majors/minors and other undergraduates, to guiding students on appropriate GCH applications, and to developing GCH’s community partnerships. We are conducting another separate search focused on health justice and quantitative research at the same time with a similar timeline for application and assessment. https://recruit.ucsc.edu/JPF00787

In both searches consideration of potential contributions to the interdisciplinary GCH programming and to diversity, equity, and inclusion will be of paramount importance.

The selected candidate will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service and must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The selected candidate will hold a 100 percent teaching and research appointment in a department in the Division of Social Sciences and will be expected to teach courses in support of GCH’s goals and contribute to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students. The normal teaching load in the division is four courses over three quarters. The faculty members in the division conduct high quality, cutting edge, interdisciplinary research, and perform university, public, and professional service. The division confers the most undergraduate degrees on campus, and each department has a Ph.D. program.

UC Santa Cruz values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to hiring faculty who share these values. UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-in-family students. To be considered, candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing traditionally underrepresented groups and must discuss their past and/or future contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and service.
