Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a junior specialist position. Under the direction of Associate Professor Laura Sanchez, the junior specialist will be responsible for co-culturing bacteria and fungi derived from the cheese rind microbiome and carrying out advanced mass spectrometry experiments, including tandem mass spectrometry on an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) as well as imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) experiments using matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization trapped ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry (MALDI-tims-qTOF MS). Major duties will include maintaining instruments, designing and performing co-culture experiments, creating professional reports to share with collaborators, and general lab duties, such as ordering supplies and data maintenance. The candidate will be expected to learn new techniques and implement protocols; have strong attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills; exercise good time management and problem-solving skills; and work effectively in a team environment. Applicants with expertise in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, extraction of microbial cultures, and/or microbiology are strongly encouraged to apply.
