Job Description:
The Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa
Cruz, as part of the Materials Science & Engineering Initiative,
invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position
in experimental materials and condensed matter physics at the
Assistant or Associate Professor level focusing on novel quantum
and advanced functional materials. Specific expertise is sought in
synthesis of bulk single crystal (using, e.g., floating zone, flux,
vapor transport and other methods) as well as characterization
(both structural and physical properties). Candidates with a strong
record of publication in the field of quantum and advanced
materials and with a strong commitment to research and teaching are
especially encouraged to apply. We seek scholars who are seriously
committed to applying inclusive undergraduate and graduate
mentoring practices, and to applying inclusive teaching practices
of undergraduate courses. Candidates with exceptional
qualifications may be hired at the Associate Professor level.
The selected candidate is expected to establish a vigorous research
program in experimental quantum materials within the Physics
Department's condensed matter physics group. The selected candidate
will be expected to teach Physics courses at the undergraduate and
graduate levels and perform service to the department and
university. The selected candidate is also expected to participate
in the UC Santa Cruz Materials Science & Engineering Initiative by
engaging in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and to engage
with a future Materials Science & Engineering graduate program.
UC Santa Cruz is distinguished by our high-impact research and our
commitment to diversity, social justice, the environment, and
educational opportunity. We are a Hispanic-Serving Institution
(HSI), and an Asian American, Native American, Pacific
Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) with a high proportion of
first-generation students and Pell recipients. We welcome and
encourage applications from candidates who demonstrate a commitment
to equity and inclusion through research, teaching, mentoring,
community engagement and/or service and that have experience in
creating an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We welcome
candidates with demonstrable, or a strong potential to develop,
leadership skills, particularly in promoting diversity, equity, and
inclusion. Moreover, at UC Santa Cruz, all these activities will be
recognized as important during the faculty promotion process.
UCSC is committed to addressing the holistic needs of faculty. We
also welcome applications from those who have had non-traditional
career paths, who have taken time off for personal reasons, or who
have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement
representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing
investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic
institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten
years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place
of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this
representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the
hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline
that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing
investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the
subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement
agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated
misconduct.)
